Family Fishing Experience

YouTube Poster

Everyone had a fantastic day fishing at Hilton Fishing Lakes in Yarm, guided by Dave Munt – Angling Trust Club & Fishery Development Officer.

A big thank you to Dave for giving up his time to make this day possible and also a big thank you to Alan & Barbara for letting us use Hilton Fishing Lakes for our family fishing event.

This is the second time we have attended a fishing event with Autism Parents Together. I thought it might be nice for other parents to hear about our experience as it might encourage others to feel able to book on to this great event.

Alfie and Charlie are 12 and Alfie has Autism. He typically gets frustrated very easily, gives up when things don’t happen immediately and can have a meltdown if he perceives that something is failing. The boys love being outdoors and when I first saw the event advertised I thought it sounds ok but as a non fisher if I have to do anything to help its doomed !!

Today we attended the second event at Hilton Fishing Lakes.

The team from Autism Parents Together had organised the event and Andy Clayton was on hand to answer all of my little queries beforehand. He booked us a time slot that worked well. I knew that if it didn’t work out it wasn’t the end of the world.

The lake at Hilton is very quiet with lots of grassy area around the lake. Dave was extremely friendly, calm and patient with the boys. We didn’t need to bring any equipment and when we turned up where he had everything prepared for the children to get going. Dave was very attentive with all the kids helping them to recast (if that’s the term) and talking to them about everything to do with fishing – the kids were very interested ! As the event only lasts for an hour its long enough to give them a little taster and not too long that they loose interest and get bored.

Anyway for anyone that is unsure I highly recommend giving it a go – both boys enjoyed it and we will definitely being signing up to do it again.
