Group 55 1
Parent
I was initially introduced to Autism Parents Together by a now close friend who is also a volunteer for the charity. APT provides support for parents/carers of Neurodiverse children. My daughter has recently being diagnosed with Autism, ADHD and sensory processing difficulties and it would have been a very lonely assessment journey without APT. I have gained so much knowledge and understanding of ASD since joining the parent Facebook support group. It is such a valuable group to be a part of, you can ask any question and know they’ll be plenty of helpful replies from other parent/carers that just “get it”. I have attended training courses provided by the charity such as “Autism in Girls” which was extremely insightful. They also provide subsidised events for our children such as exclusive hire of trampoline parks, swimming pools, soft plays etc. These events are also open to sibling which is fantastic. The events provide an opportunity for our children to be themselves without judgement and for us parents to grab a quick cuppa and chat to other parents who are going through the same thing, without judgement. The services the Charity offers within the Tees Valley area are outstanding. It bridges a huge gap in assistance /support.

The Story of
My autistic son is nearly 16yo and we have been coming to Autism Parents Together Teesside events for years. It is wonderful to be in a space where everyone simply gets it and nothing needs to be explained or justified. It's fantastic that siblings are welcome too. My son has a younger brother and sister and, if they've ever missed out on things because it has been difficult for him, it is made up for by these events. It can be hard to balance sibling happiness in a neurodiverse family and your charity helps so much to alleviate mum guilt over this. The events are varied and the subsidised prices make it less frustrating when he needs breaks to sit with his phone during the sessions, or if he might want to leave early... except this doesn't happen because he genuinely enjoys himself! He doesn't really interact with others and it's so nice that I can join in too and encourage him to participate by example. I hope the events like Clip n Climb and Tazerz might continue to be available to him as he gets older and I'm parenting an adult.
